Title: SNMP v3 Support
Post by: rickli on September 04, 2009, 07:12:44 PM
Even though this forum doesn't have to be NeDi related I want to use this thread to gather ideas on how to implement SNMP v3. Here's what I concluded so far:

Only write access should be using v3, in order to preserve resources. In other words, why should IF statistics or even worse uptime monitoring be encrypted? This will require a new approach in determing a device's capabilities (e.g. try v3 first then also find a v2 readonly community).

I prefere v2 as well for Monitoring, because you will waste a lot of time with "Real existing SNMPv3 and interoperation problems" and at least less troubleshooting possibilities because NetSNMP's Binaries works just sometimes while everything written in C/Perl/PHP is working and if you need traces, OID's are crypted as well.

But if you will bring nedi as a network management system in consulting situations you can only win the project if you can support SNMPv3 today, because the customer makes the decission to want SNMPv3 for everything.

With this libs nedi runs with snmpv3/v2/v1 also mixed in a network

I have a FW that is centrally management and I am only allow v3 RO access to the device.

Does Nedi now support this?

Thanks

On version 1.4 is there a patch or something I need to install to have the V3 functionality?

Thanks
