ESXi host config backup
« on: May 28, 2017, 01:32:14 PM »
I have a general question about configuration backup for EXSi hosts by NEDI. What kind of backup could be done by NEDI backup job? Host configuration or VMs config? What I see, that there is a backup job for VMWare OS that trying to get .vmx files from datastore1 .. and it fails because there is no such data-store on my Vmware Hosts .. Is there any way to setup data-store names or there should be some kind of auto-config?
Thanks.

for file in /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/*/*.vmx; do echo \#== $file ===========
=====================; cat $file; done
#== /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/*/*.vmx ================================
cat: can't open '/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/*/*.vmx': No such file or directory

It's hardcoded in inc/libcli.pm, but you could easily change the $cmd{'ESX'}{'shcf'} variable..

So, in case I want to backup .VMX files of a VM placed on any Esx data-store I need to list all attached datastores to an ESX host in $cmd{'ESX'}{'shcf'} variable, one by one - right?
Is there Host's backup itself procedure? (not VMs)?

Thank and regards,
Michael

You could create a new folder and softlink all parentfolders in the there, then backup that "new folder" or use a wildcard to match all datastores (if possible). I'm aware of the implications due to different file paths. Therefore I leave it up to the users to find creative solutions :)

Remo, thank you for your explanation.. Still, the backup is only for VMs configs - right, not for ESX host config ..?

Yes, the logic behind ESX servers can be installed quite easily, but knowing what settings you had for VMs might be more benefical. At least this was the case for me...
