SYSLOG service is stopping every day
« on: August 20, 2015, 10:33:38 AM »
Hi Nedi members,

I am facing an annoying problem.
syslog service is stopping every day. i am not able to see any error. I have to start the service manually and it is running again for about 24h.
Please help me to troubleshoot and solve this issue. Nedi V1.4

Thank you

Can you start it in a terminal with -v with that it hopefully prints why it fails?

Hi rickli,

if i start syslog in the terminal there is no error.

NeDiO14:/var/nedi#./syslog.pl -v
Started with relative path!
RMON:31 entries (dev) read from nedi.monitoring
RMON:0 entries (node) read from nedi.monitoring
RUSR:0 entries (groups & 8 = 8 AND (phone != '' OR email != '')) read from nedi.users
Awaiting syslog events on port 514

I don't know what is the reason that the service hang up randomly. Everything else is working fine.

Yea but now wait 24 hours, with syslog.pl started in terminal using the -v parameter, and see if it prints the reason why it gets stopped.

Do you have scheduled MySQL stop/start during e.g. backups? Something seems to be making MySQL go away and syslog.pl doesn't like that.

Hi Hannu,

No, there is no backup configured. Is there any backup or cleanup configured by default? I am only able to find the monthly db cleanup in crontab.
Seems to be that the mysql server is stopped by an event and successfully started again afterwards.
hmm...

What distribution or operating system are you running? Maybe try to google e.g. "ubuntu mysql stops starts daily" or something like that if it's a known feature of your system.

I am running OpenBSD5.6 with NediO14.
I think my last idea are the timeout settings configured by mysql.

Maybe there are too many connections with the default configured timeout settings of 8h? But I am wondering why i should the only nediuser with that problems  :'(

Do you run NediO14 on a virtual machine? Perhaps the VM slows down every day (for some reason) and becomes so unresponsive that MySQL doesn't like that. Just guessing and throwing ideas...

Thank you Hannu for all you input! Yes Nedio14 is running on a virtual machine. Already checked the vmware status with the performance monitor and i can't see any problem there..

If i execute show processlist; i am able to see the nedi connection to the mysql server with status sleep and time xxx.. Is it possible that the thread is killed after sleep time is 28000 (8h)?
I am only logging warning message so it is fact that there is often no event for more than 8 hours..(especially over night). That will explain the time windows of about 24h the service is stopping.

Thank you

For what it's worth, I'm using NeDiO14 on bare metal and VMs, but never saw that problem! However I'm pretty sure that OBSD's disk performance under VMware is not exactly overwhelming. I'd recommend debian instead...very easy to setup too.
