Problem with MAC to IP match with NeDiO8
« on: September 27, 2013, 10:16:26 AM »
Hi,

I recently upgraded from nedi-1.0.7 (on Ubuntu) to NeDiO8 and found that NeDio8 can't match MAC to IP on one of my Cisco 3750-stacks.
There is no problem with any other router (about 20 routers) on the network, just this one.
All MAC's on this stack is mapped to IP 0.0.0.0

The difference between the two 3750-stacks is shown below:

This one match MAC to IP
==================
Switch     Ports     Model                        SW Version           SW Image
   1          30         WS-C3750X-24         15.0(1)SE2            C3750E-UNIVERSALK9-M
* 2          30         WS-C3750X-24         15.0(1)SE2            C3750E-UNIVERSALK9-M

This one does't match MAC to IP
======================
Switch     Ports     Model                        SW Version           SW Image
   1          30        WS-C3750E-24TD     15.0(2)SE2            C3750E-UNIVERSALK9-M
* 2          30        WS-C3750E-24TD     15.0(2)SE2            C3750E-UNIVERSALK9-M

Are there any known issues regarding this on NeDiO8?

On a sidenote:
The /var partitition could be bigger on NeDiO8. On our network we have just above 1000 nodes and the /var/rrd fills up the partitition. I did a work around and made a symbolic link to /home for this directory.

Best regards

Can you check ArpND in the .def? Watch the Defgen tutorial for more info...

I always create just one partition for NeDiO as sql binlogs can grow quite large as well. However you can have rrds smaller (only applies upon creation), when reducing rrdsize in nedi.conf

Thank you for your reply.
I did watch the defgen tutorial, very informative!

First of all I must correct myself, there was a problem with both 3750-stacks.

I did a snmp-walk on both stacks and found that it took a loooong time to recieve the result from .1.3.6.1.2.1.4.22.1.2
One of the stacks had 1628 ARP entries, and the snmp-walk took 2 minuts and 20 seconds to complete.
On the other stack there was 3653 ARP entries, and I aborted the walk after 4 minutes.

I changed the time out for SNMP from 2 seconds to 180 seconds in nedi.conf and got good result from the first stack. I didn't do the test on the other stack but I am almost sure that if I had turned up the timeout even more I would eventually get result from the other stack.

On NeDi 1.0.7 the SNMP timeout was 2 seconds and NeDi was able to get the result anyway. Have there been any major changes in the way NeDi resolves ARP to IP after 1.0.7?
I have this problem with NeDiO8 and on NeDi 1.0.9 (nedi-240.tgz) but not on NeDi 1.0.7.

I did change quite a few things around SNMP. How long does the discovery of those switches take in oh7 and oh8 and oh9 (when working)?

I'll have to make this test later in the day when there are less ARP's in the table (about 3500 during daytime).
BTW I can't see how I can do this test on NeDi 1.0.7, is there any way to do this via the GUI?

Did 1.0.7 get the ARP table row by row and 1.0.8 and onwards gets the whole table in one big chunk? That could explain why it works with a 2 sec timeout in 1.0.7?!

Test results

snmp-walk from a another machine:
"snmpwalk -v 2c -On -c password IP .1.3.6.1.2.1.4.22.1.2" took 4 min 55 sec with ~2600 ARP entries

NeDi 1.0.8
(IPv4 ipNetToMedia) took 4 min 44 sec with ~2500 ARP entries

NeDi 1.0.9
(IPv4 ipNetToMedia) took 4 min 24 sec with ~2450 ARP entries

As I mentioned, I can't find a simular way to perform the test from the GUI in 1.0.7

Is it possible that 1.0.7 used snmpgetnext in a loop instead of snmpwalk?

You should see how long it took at the end of the "DISC:ToDo/Done-Time" line of each device. I'd be interested in knowing how oh7 performed! They're all using SNMP v2c, right?

Glad oh9 seems to be faster. I've used the get_table method in all versions, but changed the Arp/ND options for IPv6 support in oh8. So, you might play with that in the .def file...

I did a "Discover & Configuration Backup" from the "Device status"-page, is that what you meant?

If so, here are the results:
(1077 ARP's on the router at this time)
DISC:ToDo/Done-Time =    0/1-86s

Well you can just discover or use System-NeDi directly with add IP and Verbose checked. Then look for a line like this:

DISC:ToDo/Done-Time                                            0/1-1s
