Problem discover neighbours: no response from, not discoverable
« on: December 22, 2011, 12:22:07 PM »
Hello,

THE SITUATION:
- there are two switches (SMC 8950EM, lets say Switch-1 and Switch-2 with IPs x.x.x.1 and x.x.x.2 for better explanation), both with SNMP and LLDP enabled, linked to each other.
- the .def-file was hand made with defgen and MIBrowser, but I'm not sure if all OIDs are setted correct.
- both switches can be discovered with their IPs in seedlist

THE PROBLEM:
- calling .\nedi -po brings:

DP-OUI-Discovery (1.0.6) with 1 seed at Thu Dec 22 12:06:38 2011
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Device                          Status                          Todo/Done-Time
===============================================================================
x.x.x.1  Switch-1 v1SuSmSt i52        Dpp1/0   f141Use of uninitialized value $misc::poew in numeric gt (>) at ./inc/libdb-msq.pm line 762.
    1/1-10s
)           No response from Switch-2, not discoverable               0/1-0s
===============================================================================

In the Nedi GUI I can see this info at the according port of Switch-1:
Ethernet Port on unit 1, port 1 LLDP:Switch-2,ab34cd78ef04

My suspicion: Nedi has no info about the chassies-ID ab34cd78ef00 and is not able to assign ID ab34cd78ef04 to the Switch with the ID ab34cd78ef00. So my def-file could be wrong! Which def-file entry belongs to this info?

THE QUESTION:
What am I doing wrong? I don't know, which values I should get with a SNMPGET for mostly all nedi def.file entries.
Where can I get some info about these entries? This would be very helpfull!

Thanks, daytripper

1) Try running that same command with -v to get more information and tell us the output.

.\nedi -pov

2) My first guess is that the DEF file is trying to get POE information but it has the wrong SNMP OID in the def file.  To find out which DEF file Nedi  is trying to use, search for the device in "Device List".  Click on the device.  Then click on the protractor icon that has a mouse-over text of "Edit DEF".  Then look at the SysObjId field which is the name of the DEF file.

Hello,

thanks for your hint!

1) Here is the output from ./nedi .pov.
I found
ERR :LLDP PoE The requested table is empty or does not exist
The entry in DEF-File "IF Power" is empty. How can I find the right OID?
ERR :Unable to resolve the UDP/IPv4 address ") "
Which DEF-file entry is responsible for this nonsense value?

The output:

Ok, SMC 8950EM does not support POE.
Exists an other possibility?
If not, this thread is closed!

Thanks, daytripper

This line pretty much says, that PoE is "empty":
ERR :LLDP PoE The requested table is empty or does not exist

This one on the other hand shows what's happening:
LLDP:Switch-2 78cd8e on Port1  )            SMC TigerS SMC TigerStack

The IP address is interpreted as garbage and then it tries to resolves this garbage in DNS, since it's not a regular IP address. What do you get, if you walk 1.0.8802.1.1.2.1.4.2.1.3?

In case you are not familiar with SNMP walking....

Hello,

POE is empty because I don't know the OID.
In the manual I could not found any hints, that my switch (SMC8848M) would support POE.

Such errors are usually the result of wrong .defs
If you don't know the PoE OID, there should be nothing after IFpowr

I hope to be able to create those tutorials soon!
