News / NeDi 2.0C released
« on: March 18, 2021, 01:07:51 pm »
You can update directly from 1.8. Just make sure you keep those nedi.conf changes in mind:

1.9:
asset received a "loc" option
ignorename replaced with namefilter (make sure it's added, see below)
mapna received "map2BASE" option to replace the -F argument in nedi.pl -> READ BELOW!

#========================================
# Important info on deprecated -F option:
# If you've used -F before, simply remove -F from contrab entries (no further action needed)
# If you didn't use -F before, you might want to add this line to nedi.conf to avoid getting new devices with FQDN:
mapna      default      map2BASE
# Add this to discover all possible names
namefilter   .
=========================================

2.0:
- Added nodev to completely ignore certain neighbor device types (like border does for names)
- Added mail format options for adding date and mime headers or set html format (default if omitted is plaintext)
- Replaced {s}ize in staticmap URI with {w}idth and {h}eight
- Field order of ldapmap changed, review if used
- Removed redbuild (was anyone using it?) due to new building icons
- Removed global thresholds to make it simpler (they can be set per record now)
  Internal defaults are:
  traffic alert       75
  broadcast alert   250
  noreply        2
  latency warning   100
--> Review your interface thresholds!

Important!
==========
- Due to the removal of the dns tables all node names need to be rescanned. There is a shortcut for that in System-NeDi...
- Add "admin" to the local group in User-Management or it will be authenticated against LDAP or Radius, if configured
  Additional benefit, the "admin" can be replaced by a different username now...

News / NeDi 1.9 Update
« on: February 09, 2021, 06:33:10 pm »
Security researcher Veno Eivazian found some vulnerabilities in Nodes-Traffic and Monitoring-History (only exploitable by authenticated users). I thank him for contacting me thus helping to improve NeDi! He mentioned System-Files as well, but as this module can perform actual software updates and is only accessible by admins, any "mitigation" would defeat its purpose.

Please update NeDi 1.9 with this patch https://www.nedi.ch/pub/nedi-1.9C1.ptc

I?ve also provided Patch4 for NeDi 2.0 in the customer area.

The good news is that NeDi 2.1 is on a good track for release by the end of March. It'll contain many usability and visual improvements as the new dashboard picture shows..

I can happily announce the release of NeDi 1.9 community edition along with the brand new NeDian20 appliance. I've also updated nebuntu.sh to work with the latest Ubuntu distros. The release movie will be available soon.

Have fun in those difficult times and stay healthy!

Thanks to the ingenious minds over at www.dumplab.ch, you can have DHCP based OS fingerprinting for NeDi nodes. And best of all, it's free!

News / Optical Monitoring
« on: January 22, 2018, 05:44:16 pm »
A question for you experts. Would you agree to monitor send and receive signal strength would be the most important?
Also, would it suffice to test against a minimum threshold or do we need to test against a maximum threshold as well?

I'm looking at getting this feature into 1.8, but I don't want to snmpwalk more OIDs than absolutely necessary...

Another open issue, do I assign the optics to the interfaces or the modules? Depending on equipment vendor one is easier than the other. However, I lean towards modules because the DB structure won't need changing and would be more efficient (rather than adding unused fields on thousands of copper ports).

News / Anyone using descfilter?
« on: October 24, 2017, 12:01:31 pm »
There's a descfilter option in nedi.conf, which let's you avoid discovering HP Laserprinters for example. Usually no one using this option, but I'm wondering if anyone relies on it?

I'm asking as I'm optimizing the discovery for 1.8 and may have to replace it with a name and sysobjidfilter instead...

News / NeDi's future, pls read!
« on: February 24, 2015, 09:43:27 pm »
1) Everybody using and especially providing services for NeDi should consider that its development needs to be financed somehow.
I've answered a post today, pointing this out: https://forum.nedi.ch/index.php?topic=1693.msg7324#msg7324

2) Contact me before including NeDi in a commercial product, so we can work out a business model!

For all the newcomers here: Thanks to the Spammers, each registration will be reviewed prior authorization. Please don't use freemail accounts and unpronounceable names. We are a quite serious networking community here, hence you won't have to worry about any side effects when using even your work email address. This will make my life easier, leaving more time to further develop NeDi...
