News / Translations
« on: October 11, 2016, 01:32:55 PM »
Nedi 1.7 will support complete translations of the GUI (including menus). Any volunteers to provide a translation to their own language are highly appreciated. I'll include screenshots in the next official post. The first one (that triggered the whole thing) came from russia! German is done as well.

Use this english gui.php as a template. You probably want to change charset to "utf-8" for any non-western language.
Contact me, if you want to work on Italian as I can provide a better  template:

News / NeDi's future, pls read!
« on: February 24, 2015, 09:43:27 PM »
1) Everybody using and especially providing services for NeDi should consider that its development needs to be financed somehow.
I've answered a post today, pointing this out: https://forum.nedi.ch/index.php?topic=1693.msg7324#msg7324

2) Contact me before including NeDi in a commercial product, so we can work out a business model!

News / Anybody using -N ?
« on: July 18, 2014, 10:42:42 PM »
Or in other words intentionally keeping devices in the nodes table? Please let me know why you'd need this...

Usually MACs and IPs of devices should not appear in nodes. This will become even more important as I'm working on more sophisticated IP management features...

Discovery / netfilter logic
« on: April 01, 2014, 01:39:00 PM »
Something that's been bothering me for a while is that netfilter and descfilter use contrary logic! I plan to invert netfilter for matching networks you wish to ignore (same logic as descfilter).

New examples:

netfilter commented = discover them all
netfilter ^(129.129|192.168) = Avoid 129.129/16 and 192.168/16, but discover everything else

News / NeDi 1.0.9 Progress
« on: May 31, 2013, 09:55:55 PM »
I've started working on the next development cycle of NeDi. I'll focus on monitoring improvements (individual thresholds for example) and GUI enhancements. One of of the latter being inline-maps. Here's a little taste:

News / Something to think about...
« on: January 22, 2013, 10:42:08 PM »
There is this flight simulator called X-plane I used to enjoy a lot (unfortunately all my spare time is put into NeDi these days). But today I stumbled across a topic, that keeps popping up in my head from time to time and that's why I'm posting this...

Please read: http://www.x-plane.com/x-world/lawsuit/details/

I really hope this will eventually stop and free spirits can innovate without fear!

News / Open Tuesday event in Zurich
« on: April 03, 2012, 11:25:01 PM »
I've just been at a very interesting presentation from Tobias Oetiker: http://www.digicomp.ch/opentuesday

I'm wondering if there would be enough NeDi enthusiasts, coming to Zurich, if I was to present NeDi following a casual get-together afterwards?

News / NeDi 1.0.8 Progress
« on: February 12, 2012, 10:41:48 AM »
With all the groundwork laid in the previous version, the new development is geared towards enterprise networks. Amongst many other ideas I want to pursue the following:

  • IPv6 support
  • Parallel discovery and monitoring
  • Wlan controller support (mainly HP-MSM, Cisco and Aruba)
  • Discards, broadcast and status change added to interfaces & reports added
  • Rackview and better documentation support in Topo-Table
  • Using crypt instead of md5 to hash pw (Sorry all pw need to be reset!)
  • Timezone support for users (we'll see with daylight saving, if it really works!)
  • Generate weekly summary of new nodes and devices as a chat message (what else would be interesting?)
  • Added snapshots, to go back in time or even browse another nedi-db without affecting production.  Screenshot shows the new snapshot module, with a snapshot actually activated (no N logo as a reminder)
  • 95% info on traffic graphs (only single interfaces!)

News / NeDi 1.0.7 Progress
« on: September 03, 2011, 12:32:28 AM »
Coming along nicely! I'm finishing multi-tenancy (meaning a user can be given access to just some deivces, based on location, contact, type, community or vtp domain for example). While testing notification in a Ski resort (hey, I'm Swiss go figure) some SMS notification issues surfaced, which need to be addressed.

I just found a bug, where the wrong vlan is assigned to the nodes. Amongst many other minor fixes and improvements I expect to get everything done within a month or so!

Other / Help Improving NeDi's Usability
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:04:09 AM »
Tell me what you need and how you expect this tool to work. Some users do this already and the outcome are things like Google Maps integration, which I think is a great thing! Of course this will be developed further...

But since I don't use NeDi in operations every day, you're probably closer to the workflows in the daily business than I am! I tried to implement some logic with the new reports (e.g. you'd click on a name rather than a device, to be consistent with certain reports). But this might as well be confusing, thus tell me how you think it should be...

Another example, what would you like to see linked in Devices-Status, when you click on an IF IP? Where do you expect links to the map etc.

Last but not least, you might have been wondering about the diskspace those RRDs eat up? Well, besides the added benefit of broadcast and discard graphs, I've added consolidation with MAX values. You'll see the difference when you scroll back far enough and uncomment the appropriate $agrtyp in html/inc/libgraph.php on line 37 or 38. MAX keeps the peaks (effectifely showing more) than AVERAGE which swallows the peaks so to speak.

Post your feedback here to sculpt the next version!  8)

Cheers

Discovery / Printer as Wlan scanner
« on: March 11, 2011, 06:49:56 PM »
That's why I love working on NeDi! Had a quick look at a HP Officejet with Wlan and I have to say, the SNMP implementation got a lot more interesting! You can even see the Wlan APs near by, which could be (ab)used to detect rogue APs:

SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.11.2.4.3.20.33.1.2.1 = STRING: "<BSSID ID=\"0x80:b3:x0:xx:xx:xx\" NAME=\"fussanet\"><CAPABILITY VALUE=\"0x0011\"/><CHANNEL NUMBER=\"1\"/><SIGNAL STRENGTH=\"-58\"/></BSSID>"
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.11.2.4.3.20.33.1.2.2 = STRING: "<BSSID ID=\"0xcc:1e:x7:xx:xx:xx\" NAME=\"NetSe60\"><CAPABILITY VALUE=\"0x0011\"/><CHANNEL NUMBER=\"6\"/><SIGNAL STRENGTH=\"-78\"/></BSSID>"
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.11.2.4.3.20.33.1.2.3 = STRING: "<BSSID ID=\"0x46:db:xa:xx:xx:xx\" NAME=\"NETGEAR\"><CAPABILITY VALUE=\"0x0011\"/><CHANNEL NUMBER=\"1\"/><SIGNAL STRENGTH=\"-87\"/></BSSID>"

News / NeDi 1.0.6 Public Beta
« on: December 05, 2010, 09:47:05 PM »
Here it is! After way too much delay, but please keep in mind it's beta thus not thoroughly tested! Expect to see many warnings, but that's just because I turned them on in Perl. The config file should explain the most important things and perldoc is supported as well...

The current version can be found at http://www.nedi.ch/files:download (number is the day of year)

Post feedback in this thread during beta phase...

Good luck  ;)

General Topics / Firefox following ssh:// & telnet:// links
« on: April 14, 2010, 09:52:30 PM »
This issue seems to keep coming back like a fat fly, when you're about to doze off...

Solutions which allegedly used to work fail with my Ubuntu Lucid system, so I decided to tackle this issue again. I'm sure there's a more elegant approach, but I just needed a quick fix for developing NeDi more efficiently :)

In about:config create those booleans:

network.protocol-handler.expose.ssh;false
network.protocol-handler.expose.telnet;false

Create a script cli.sh:
#!/bin/sh

case "$1" in
   *telnet*)
   xterm -e telnet `echo $1 | sed -e "s/telnet:\/\///"`
   ;;
   *ssh*)
      xterm -e ./ssh.sh `echo $1 | sed -e "s/ssh:\/\///"`
   ;;
esac

and ssh.sh (clumsy, I know):
#!/bin/sh

echo -n "username:"
read name
ssh -l $name $1

chmod both to 755

First time you click on a telnet:// or ssh:// link you'll be prompted for a program. Browse for cli.sh for both...

News / NeDi 1.0.6 Progress
« on: January 16, 2010, 12:15:36 AM »
I just achieved a milestone in NeDi's SSH support. Further development is going to keep me busy for a while, so I hope the community will help those, who experience problems with the current version. Check out this thread for development progress. I'll also put up some news on the homepage now and then...

  • nosnmpdev now honours border (to avoid phones showing up as devices). Added support for Aastra phones.
  • SNMP support for Alcatel switches confirmed. CLI support under investigation.
  • Config backup for ProCurve switches working now
  • New CLI library supports Enterasys and Extreme devices. Much better SSH using io::pty and openssh.
  • Fixed bug for TopRRDs http://forum.nedi.ch/index.php?topic=618.msg2747#msg2747
  • Experimented with gammu and a mobile phone for sending SMSs. Looking good so far!
  • Tables can be optimized from Other-Export now. This is handy when NeDi slows down with large tables (I'd still keep messages under a million, though)
  • GUI enhancements: Printout feature added, reports can be filtered with certain criterias
  • Stale discovery threads and nodelocks will be taken care of (based on OXO's suggestion)
  • Optimized monitoring (e.g. no (had some issues with latency calculation) Less bursty polls), many GUI improvements
  • Redesigning monitoring! Nodes can be added for service checks as well now!
  • New SNMP library in progress...(working, write access still WIP), improved GUI SNMP in the meantime
  • Added LWP support for Aastra phones
  • Added CDP detection for vSwitches (see attached). Now the topology extends beyond virtualisation!
  • Improved IF metrics
  • Improving Device-Writer. Probably bringing back CatOS support for BridgeFWD via CLI
  • -I option replaced with setting in nedi.conf, which lets you choose IF IP by device type
